Sustainability
Our Sustainable Future
The New South Wales Masonic Club and Castlereagh Boutique Hotel is committed to achieving better sustainability within our heritage building, by reducing our Greenhouse Gas Emissions where practical. We are working towards achieving this through a program of continually evaluating our operational practices and making positive changes.
Our Environmental, Social & Governance (ESG) activities are inspired by some of the United Nations Global Compact 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
Our Members and Hotel Guests are now more aligned with sustainability initiatives than ever before within the Hospitality Sector. We have embraced our duty to ensure our heritage building, built in 1927, is as energy-efficient as possible and that we continually enhance our environmental responsibilities as a Registered Club and Hotel.
Our Actions
With the support of our sustainability consultants, Environmental Global Benefits, we are measuring and reducing our environmental footprint through the following actions:
- We have commissioned annual Greenhouse Gas Emission Reports for the years 2021 to 2024 financial years.
- Reviewed and reduced all electricity, gas, water & waste usage and related costs. We share the profits of our waste reduction initiatives with our staff.
- Upgraded plant & equipment to be more energy-efficient, such as air-conditioning and pumps.
- Changed our in-room collateral: recycling bins, replaced small amenity bottles with large refillable and recyclable hotel amenities, water-saving shower heads, digital compendiums, “housekeeping on demand” to opt out of daily servicing and paper-less check in options and many more initiatives.
- Commissioned an Energy Audit and a heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) Audit to understand the building’s highest power consumers and to plan for the future.
- Upgraded our building with energy-efficient LED lighting.
Social
- We created a safe meeting place for our Club Members and Hotel guests to relax in.
- Support our Social Sub Clubs to promote Member’s mental health, wellbeing and friendship.
- Embraced a multi-cultural, inclusive work culture which caters for people with disabilities.
- Donate accommodation gift vouchers to worthy causes as prizes.
- Support our Sub Clubs with an annual food & beverage allowance, meeting spaces and discounts.
- Align ourselves with Not for Profit charities such as Humanitix (an event booking platform) who raise funds for human-related education projects and Soap Aid (Hotel amenities) who donates profits to improve health in underprivileged countries.
- Host inclusive events such as ANZAC Day, Remembrance Day, Annual Scottish Highland Lunch, Christmas in July and specialty events, all of which are opened to the public.
Governance
- We are committed to a whole of property approach to supporting our Environmental and Social initiatives from the Board through to Management and staff, Members and Hotel Guests.
- Engaged our Sustainability Consultants, Environmental Global Benefits to assist us with the creation of all policies, processes and related ESG documents.
- Monitors all of our risk and compliance matters, diligently providing monthly updates to the Board for informed decision-making.
- Created a Roadmap of past, present and future environmental actions. See next page.
- Communicate our plans through social media, website, annual report and internally to our Members, Hotel Guests and employees.
- We are committed to reducing our environmental footprint through all the above initiatives and new actions, for future generations.
